Around 6:15am on the morning of December 29, 2012, a car being driven by 18-year-old Thomas Bono was involved in a fatal accident when Bono allegedly lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a utility pole on Race Street in Lehigh County. Both Bono and his 18-year-old high school sweetheart, Jaenis Delos Santos, were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Two additional passengers, 21-year-old Aaron Machado and a 17-year-old female, sustained undisclosed injuries in the accident, but were transported to St. Luke's Hospital in Bethlehem for treatment. The cause of the accident, and whether or not speed or alcohol played a role in the fatal accident, is still under investigation.
One of the most common causes of serious injuries and death in the United States comes from car accidents. While drivers must take precaution to ensure their safety, the safety of their passengers, and the safety of those on the road around them, many circumstances can lead to a car accident. Some car accidents are simply that, accidents, while other car accidents are caused by some form of negligence, neglect or outright disregard for the safety of others. Driver distraction, speeding, reckless driving, drunk driving, unsafe road conditions, poor weather conditions, lack of proper signage, defective auto parts, and improperly maintained roads are all factors capable of causing car accidents.
